Keep it in mind people… …Nonetheless our six hours there were quite something … it’s really best I shut up and show you what I mean. After all, I took several thousand photos… if you are game for a few, get a cuppa and settle in.

Black Hat Vegas Conference Wrap-Up

The Black Hat computer security conference ended today, after five days of training sessions, briefings, and schmoozing. Hackers, computer security experts (ex-hackers), companies that provide security, companies that want more security, and representatives of various government agencies assemble here each year for several days of socialization skills practice. It’s basically Burning Man without the dirt.

The conference was attended by about 4,200 people in the computer security community, including at least a few dozen women. It would be an understatement to call the world of computer security “male-dominated.” The ratio of men to women at Black Hat mirrors the ratio of men to women at the average Las Vegas strip club. Trust me, I’ve counted.

Many familiar companies were represented at the conference: Nokia, Novell, McAfee, HP, and, of course, Microsoft, to name a few. All offer security products. The rest of the companies were totally unfamiliar to me. Some of them offer computer security training; the majority sell software and/or hardware security levitra online kaufen products which all seem exactly alike to me.

I stopped by the Breach booth first, and got a general idea of what they offer. Then I heard eerily similar sales pitches at almost every other booth. I attribute this to my lack of knowledge regarding computer security solutions…and the fact that they all appear to be selling exactly the same thing.

What do companies do to stand out from the crowd? Edgeos [image at top of post] employed several “booth babes” in skimpy vinyl dresses. (You’re welcome guys.) Of course this marketing strategy was a hit with the majority of attendees…some of whom actually interact with women occasionally. Sometimes the old fashioned ways are still the best.

Splunk separates itself from the herd with its distinctive company name. When asked about the origin of the name, the booth person told me it had something to do with spelunking. I took this information at face value. Still, the name makes me think of equally imaginary words like “splooge.”
